How did Martin Luther King become the courageous, articulate, powerful voice and presence for Civil Rights? That’s a complicated question. One major influence on King was Howard Thurman who taught at Howard University and also at Boston University when King was a grad student there. Thurman was a mystic, theologian, Christian, and powerful preacher. He traveled to India in 1936, met Gandhi and brought back to America the message of non-violent resistance.
