Climate Action Team Update ~ June 6, 2024

From UCM’s Climate Action Team:

The team met on 5/28 and we are forging ahead with several initiatives related to UCM’s recertification as a Green Sanctuary.

We are also co-sponsoring an educational series of five programs, organized by the Montpelier Node of 350VT, each at 6:00 PM at UCM unless otherwise noted. The first, on 5/29, offered a recap of actions by the legislature concerning renewable energy. Upcoming meetings are Wednesday, June 26 at the Aldrich Library in Barre, “Rental Weatherization;” Wednesday, July 17 at UCM, “Thermal Energy Networks;” Wednesday, August 14 at UCM, “Theory of Change;” and Wednesday, September 25 at UCM, “Where the Rubber Meets the Road.” Food will be provided, and child care can be arranged with notice! Please join us.

Additionally, Bill McKibben, founder of 350.org and Third Act, will speak on Thursday, June 20 at 6:30 PM at American Flatbread in Waitsfield.

The Climate Action Team will be continuing its Net Zero work, investigating how to heat our church with more climate-friendly fuel and addressing the Green Sanctuary components of Mitigation, Congregational Transformation, Community Resilience, and Climate Justice.

The Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) will also be sponsoring a national Climate Justice Revival in the fall, which UCM expects to join.

Volunteers are needed for these and other projects. Other projects include keeping the CAT section of the UCM web page updated (a volunteer with familiarity with WordPress is greatly needed); developing a resource bank of church members who can advise homeowners in the congregation wanting to undertake climate-related renovations; and serving as liaison to likeminded organizations such as VT Interfaith Action and Third Act.

We hope many UCM members & friends will find the time and fire in the belly to join in the work ahead!

The team also needs a Chair or Co-chairs. Please be in touch with Anne Sarcka if interested ~ Thank you!
