Dear friends,

This summer has been mostly quiet musically, punctuated with a few meaningful events. 

The “One Year (…and a week) Later” flood remembrance service was sparsely attended but inspiring and nurturing for those who did, with music provided by our wonderful Eliza Thomas and vocalist Mary Bonhag.   

Maggie Rebmann’s recent memorial service was beautiful and included selections that had populated her musical world as a minister (thanks to Paula Gills’ remembrances). In addition to the Irish and classical selections played by Eliza, a small choir formed to sing one of Maggie’s favorite anthems, “Old Irish Blessing.”  Paula performed the song she had written, at Maggie’s request, of the St. Francis Prayer, a gem I had been unaware of but which you will be hearing again this Fall!   

In early August a number of choir members and I attended an engaging day long workshop by Scottish songwriter and song-leader Ali Burns. 

Also in August, I attended the annual AUUMM (Association of UU Music Ministries) conference, this year in Albuquerque, NM. Along with being inspired by the depth of talent and diversity in the UU musical world, and gaining many specific ideas and pointers from workshops and colleagues, perhaps the single best thing about the conference was regularly singing together with 200 music leaders!  

 

I love the process of finding, planning, and making music that serves to enhance our services, amplifying Joan’s messages and our monthly themes. 

Our September theme is Belonging. I don’t think there is a better way to experience belonging than by joining with others in song, being a part of the collective vibration.

Our October theme is Acceptance. Music’s capacity to open the heart can help us FEEL what it’s like to accept ourselves, each other, and our world even when our minds haven’t quite gotten there.

Our November theme is Repair. Music’s role in healing trauma and balancing the nervous system is well-documented. Its ability to inspire helps us move forward.

 

When this newsletter comes out I will be in Sweden for a wedding, but happily anticipate being back with all of you on September 15th!
