There were over 36 active volunteers who made the recent sale a super success. Total income was $2,625.25, half going directly to the UCM General Fund. A HUGE Thank You to all who contributed such high-quality items, and to those who purchased items from the sale.  CVRAN and Good Sam, the local shelter, do not have storage spaces so people who live out, and new refugee families were encouraged to come shop and pay with “A SMILE.” This was a positive way for all to benefit! Items remaining at the end of the sale were distributed to:  People’s Health and Wellness, Another Way, Amy’s Armoire, ReSOURCE, and Central VT Solid Waste Management District ~ (see article below). A VERY HAPPY RECIPIENT of RUMMAGE SALE ITEMS:

As an example of the important sustainability practice of “repurposing” an item (or finding a new life for it to keep it out of the landfill), Central VT Solid Waste District (CVSWD) School Program Coordinator, John Jose, engages students in a hands-on activity, making totes from used shirts without the use of a sewing machine. The number of shirts needed for the program outnumbers those that students are able to bring to school with them, so being able to keep a stock, through donations such as yours, so no student is ever left out of participating in the project, is very helpful.

To provide context, students are engaged in an interactive slideshow of how people creatively repurpose items in their lives. Then, after a YouTube video outlines the process of making a tote from a shirt, students are supported in creating their totes. In the image below, students display finished totes.

CVSWD is very grateful for the box of used t-shirts, left over from the Women’s Alliance recent rummage sale, and turned over to John Jose, to support the continuation of this important, hands-on, educational program.
