Climate Action Team Update – November 21 2024

 

From UCM’s Climate Action Team:

Given that our state has endured three profoundly damaging floods in the past year, the Team’s work is more significant and timely than ever. We are working with the principles of Green Sanctuary through Mitigation, Congregational Transformation, Community Resilience and Climate Justice to:

Create a resource bank of church members willing to share their experiences in insulating their homes, installing solar panels, changing diets, etc. to assist others considering similar projects;

Explore options for using the church as an emergency resource during disasters; 

Convert our heating system from fossil fuels to biofuels;

Host a climate-focused film festival;

Study the impact of future dam removal on the church’s vulnerability to flooding; and

Organize a monthly initiative on climate-related subjects to encourage the congregation to explore additional ways to lighten our impact on the earth. 

 

We also hope to work with other local activist organizations to lobby for climate friendly bills in the legislature.

Many hands and hearts are needed to accomplish these important tasks. We hope more UCM members and friends will find the time and fire in the belly to join us in the work ahead!
