The Executive Team is pleased to share that the Music Director Search Committee has successfully identified a new Music Director to begin July 1 after Donia Prince’s retirement. You can read more about Matthew Torrez below. In the coming weeks, we will celebrate Donia’s leadership and prepare for Matthew to join our church staff team.
Matthew Torrez (he/him) is a music educator with experience teaching and directing a wide range of ensembles and classes, including choir, band, orchestra, percussion, guitar, and general music. Originally from Arizona, he began his teaching career there, spending three years teaching choir before relocating to Vermont. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Northern Arizona University, where he received training in both instrumental and vocal music.
Matthew is the Music Teacher at Albert D. Lawton Intermediate School in Essex Junction, Vermont, where he works with students to build musicianship, confidence, and community through a diverse and inclusive approach to music education. He is passionate about creating an environment of acceptance and belonging while helping students explore music from a variety of cultures and traditions. He believes that music is a source of inspiration and connection, and that everyone has both a right and an innate need to experience it.
Outside of the classroom, Matthew enjoys skiing, hiking, woodworking, video games, reading, and spending time with his family. He lives in Waterbury, Vermont, with his wife and daughter.
