Dear UCM community,
In the past few years, I’ve noticed how much blooming times can vary from place to place. When I spoke with my mother in Chicago, she mentioned that her peonies were already in full bloom, while mine had only just begun to bud. A couple weekends ago, I attended the 20th anniversary of shared ministry at the First Universalist Society of Hartland, where I was delighted to see vases filled with irises and lupines that had just begun to open here in Montpelier.
It is remarkable how just a few dozen miles, or a few degrees of warmth, can shape what blooms and when. Each flower seems to know just what it needs to unfurl and open to the world.
Summer is a great time to notice what helps our hearts and spirits grow. Just as plants need good soil, water, and air, I think we all need some basics to thrive: meaningful connection, purposeful action, and ample rest. What these look like can differ for each of us. A walk with a friend through the woods. A solitary paddle across the reservoir. Bringing a meal to a neighbor. Joining a peace demonstration. A quiet, meditative moment on your front porch.
In the months to come, I invite you to seek out moments of connection, to notice what brings you a sense of purpose, and to offer your body and spirit the rest and care they so deeply deserve.
Here at UCM, our meditation services will continue each Sunday at 10am in the vestry, offering a space for quiet reflection. We will gather outdoors for multigenerational connection, and Community Lunch will continue on Mondays, with opportunities to volunteer and share a meal with others. Our caring ministry also continues. The Lay Pastoral Care Team, Caring Network, and Care Fund are here for you. I, too, will be available for pastoral visits throughout the summer, should you wish for a listening ear or a moment of support.
May these summer days bring you moments of connection, purpose, and rest. May you tend kindly to your spirit and offer compassion wherever it is needed. Even in difficult times, may you find joy and notice the beauty that surrounds you.
