This year, Music Sunday is built around words from Psalm 42 “Like as the hart (deer) desires the water, so longs my soul after you, O God.” Settings of those words by the 16th c. Italian composer Giovanni da Palestrina and 20th c. British composer Herbert Howells will frame a 20-minute long setting of the same words for soloists, chorus, and small orchestra by the 18th c. German/English composer George Frideric Handel. Also heard will be Franz Schubert’s solo song for soprano “An die Musik” (To Music) and Estonian composer Pärt Uusberg’s choral setting of “Muusika,” which begins “somewhere the original harmony must exist.” This unique music will be sung and played at both the 9AM and 11AM services by the UCM Choir and guest musicians.
