Matthew Torrez (he/him) is a music educator, choral director, and bass singer with experience teaching and directing choir, band, orchestra, percussion, guitar, and general music. Originally from Tucson, Arizona, he began his teaching career there before moving to Vermont.
Matthew earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Northern Arizona University, where he received training in both vocal and instrumental music. During more than a decade as an educator, he has worked with students from kindergarten through high school and directed musicians with a wide range of backgrounds, interests, and experience levels.
Matthew currently teaches music and chorus at Albert D. Lawton School in Essex Junction. His work centers on helping people build musicianship, confidence, and community through music. He is passionate about creating environments of acceptance and belonging while introducing musicians to varied styles, cultures, languages, and traditions.
Matthew became Director of Music at the Unitarian Church of Montpelier in July 2026. At UCM, he directs the choir and collaborates with the minister, accompanist, worship leaders, members of the congregation, and musicians from the wider community. He believes music can be a powerful source of connection and inspiration and that everyone deserves opportunities to experience the joy of making music with others.
Outside of music, Matthew enjoys hiking, skiing, woodworking, reading, and board games. He lives in Waterbury with his wife and daughter.
